Golf Tournament Rules & Regulations

All competitions will be governed by the most current USGA Rules of Golf, with exception to the “local rules” outlined below designed to help with the pace of play. We recommend downloading the USGA Rules App to your mobile device and becoming familiar with it.

  • FORMAT: Flighted, individual stroke play.

  • FLIGHTS: The number of flights per tournament will be determined by the number of participants and will be split as evenly as possible based on handicaps.

  • TEE BOXES: Typically Flight A players will play from the back tees, with subsequent Flights playing from 1-up. Seniors (65+) and women play from the forward tees unless requested otherwise, and if so, must play from that same tee box the entire round.

  • PACE OF PLAY: “Ready Golf” should be played at all times so rounds are as short as possible for everyone! This means that if you reach your ball and are ready to hit or putt, and others in your group are not ready, then go ahead and hit or putt. Limit practice swings to two only. Keep up to the group in front of you. When able to, and not in their line of flight, drop your fellow cart player off at their ball and drive to yours to prepare for your shot.

  • SCORING: Gross Scoring is used and kept via a live, real time leaderboard. To help ensure accuracy of scores, paired groups should verify everyone’s scores after every hole. Scores MUST be entered into the live scoring system after each hole, by at least one group member. Paper score cards may also be used during your round if you like but will not be collected at the end.

To help ensure pace of play, The Maximum Stroke Count per hole is DOUBLE PAR!! Pick up and move on if you have not holed out by this point. (example: on a par 3, the max score is 6) If a player is not able to complete a hole for any reason, a DOUBLE PAR is also to be given.

No mulligans or caddies are allowed.

  • TIE-BREAKERS: Monthly tournament tie-breakers will be broken by a scorecard playoff, looking at the lowest gross score starting from the #1 handicapped hole. If still tied, then we’ll move to the next handicapped holes until a winner is decided. Any point tie-breakers at the end of the season will be broken by computing the lowest scoring averages over the entire season.

  • LOCAL RULES OF PLAY:

You have a maximum of 3 minutes to try and find any lost ball before making a decision on how to play and hitting your next shot.

Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds:

When a provisional ball has not been played, significant issues with pace of play can result for a player needing to take stroke-and-distance relief for a ball that is out of bounds or cannot be found. The purpose of this USGA Local Rule is to help with pace of play by providing an extra relief option that allows a player to play on without returning to the location of the previous stroke.

With this option a player should drop in a large area, that is not closer to the hole, between the point where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds, and the edge of the fairway. The player gets 2 penalty strokes. This local rule cannot be used for an unplayable ball, or for a ball that is in a penalty area. If a provisional ball is played and neither the original ball nor the provisional ball can be found, then the local rule may be applied for the provisional ball that cannot be found. For a complete explanation, visit USGA Stroke and Distance: New Local Rule.

Desert Rule:

The desert rule also helps with pace of play. If a ball comes to rest in a natural desert area, or in an area landscaped to resemble a natural desert, a player may either choose to hit their ball from the desert with no penalty, or take a drop with a 1 stroke penalty as if the ball entered a lateral hazard. If a player chooses to play from the desert, grounding the club and moving loose impediments will be allowed with no penalty.

A player's original ball does not have to be found to apply the “Desert Rule” when there is reasonable certainty that the ball did in fact come to rest in the desert or rough, and searching for the ball would likely delay play.

If the ball is found, but unplayable, a player has 3 options:

1.) Drop 2 club lengths from that spot but not closer to the hole (ie: you drop out of a bush you’ve hit into with a one stroke penalty)

2.) Drop back on a line keeping that spot directly between you and the hole (ie: You drop 5 yards directly behind the bush with a one stroke penalty)

3.) Play your provisional ball which is like taking a stroke and distance penalty and you’re hitting 4!

To further help with pace of play, if a player's ball is clearly hit out of bounds, or in a desert area where an out of bounds designated area or marker exists, a provisional ball must be played.

Ball in Divot: If in the fairway, and your ball lands in a divot, you may move the ball out of the divot without penalty.

Conceding Putts: Conceding opponents putts is not allowed. Picking up should only be done if you have already reached max double par on the hole.

Note: This is not the PGA tour so let’s not get too crazy with the rules out there! Guidelines are important but we want everyone to have a good time. If you do have a rule question or dispute, simply consult with your group, call the pro shop, and/or visit the USGA Rules App. Please do not slow up pace of play over rule disagreements!

  • CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY: In staying true to the word in our name, we strive to operate in excellence in everything we do and desire for this to be the same with our members. This includes how we treat each other, treat the staff at all golf courses, and how we treat the actual golf course! All players are expected to adhere to the commonly accepted standards of golfing etiquette before, during, and after their rounds. Failure to do so could result in immediate removal from the league, at the sole discretion of the league owner and/or directors, with no refunds of tournament fees or membership dues. All players are required to adhere to the dress code of each individual golf course we play at, or the golf course can refuse you the right to play. If you are refused the right to play for this reason, you will not receive a refund of your tournament registration fee.  Any player caught being dishonest with their score or handicap will be immediately removed from the league, with no refunds of tournament fees or membership dues.

  • INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: All tournaments will go on rain or shine, and every effort will be made to play all 18 holes. Play may be delayed/suspended to wait out any passing conditions (lightning, standing water, etc) at the direction of the golf course staff, if they deem the course unplayable. In this event, if you choose not to wait and finish your round, you will not receive a refund of your tournament registration fee. If an event is shortened or canceled due to inclement weather, we will work with the course to determine the facility's normal refund/rain check policy.
